This new polymer represents a very promising analog to Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) with the advantage of being synthesized with <strong>100% bio-sourced raw materials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Intro2\">In 2016, the global production of PET was estimated at almost 56 million tons per year using mainly petroleum based raw materials. Today <strong>30% bio-based PET <\/strong> can be offered industrially using bio-sourced ethylene glycol. The scope of our present research work is to develop the production and supply chain of a <strong>100% Bio-sourced PEF resin.<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.torayfilms.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/PEFPACK-II.png\" alt=\"PEFPACK-II\" width=\"100%\" height=\"50\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.torayfilms.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/puce.png\" alt=\"\" \/> <span style=\"color: #004098;\"> <strong> The main objectives of the PEFPACK II project<\/strong> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #004098;\">\u2022 <\/span>Define an <strong>industrial process for PEF synthesis <\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #004098;\">\u2022 <\/span>Develop <strong>specific grades to include flexible film applications <\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #004098;\">\u2022 <\/span>Identify key application performance requirements including <strong>barrier, mechanical properties and thermal properties<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #004098;\">\u2022 <\/span>To study the <strong>recycling chain of use<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.torayfilms.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/puce.png\" alt=\"\" \/> <span style=\"color: #004098;\"> <strong> PEF-100% Bio-sourced: a promising analog to PET<\/strong> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraphe\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">PEF has been shown to have desirable properties particularly useful for <strong>food packaging<\/strong>. Indeed, the <strong>oxygen barrier is <em>six times more effective<\/em> with PEF<\/strong> rather than PET and the <strong>humidity barrier is <em>twice as a good.<\/em><\/strong> Moreover, PEF polymer exhibiting enhanced <strong>thermal properties<\/strong>, appears as a promising candidate in food industries requiring very severe regulatory commitment (Direct food contact, pasteurization, sterilization).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraphe\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new polymer is giving better thermal and barrier performance versus PET thanks to <strong>Terephthalic acid<\/strong> being replaced by 2, 5 furan di-carboxylic (FDCA). This last monomer has been classified by the US Energy department as <strong>one of 12 molecules to be used in priority for Future Green Chemistry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.torayfilms.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/PEFPACK-II-PET-PEF-composition.png\" alt=\"PEFPACK II - PET PEF composition\" width=\"1061\" height=\"237\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.torayfilms.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/puce.png\" alt=\"\" \/> <span style=\"color: #004098;\"> <strong> Project Planning<\/strong> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraphe\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our PEFPACK II project debuted in <strong>January 2018<\/strong> and we have a target completion date of <strong>2022<\/strong>.
