TORAY TODAY #41: What future for plastic packaging in the luxury sector?

  • 15 November, 2021

Toray Films Europe’s Market Manager, Armelle VAN DUYNSLAGER, attended the LUXE PACK 2021 conference “PACKAGING AND PLASTIC: WHAT FUTURE FOR THE LUXURY SECTOR?” in Monaco. We summed up the main market trends you need to look into.

This year, the concept of sustainability is at the core of every concern. The market actors agreed to find more responsible alternatives. Among them, the use of refillable packaging, the reduction of the amount of used quantity and even the consideration of using biomaterials.

The trade union of this sector (FEBEA) aims at lowing the ecological impact of packaging by targeting by a reduction of 15% of the plastic quantity by 2025,  an incorporation between 10 and 25% of recycled plastic and also a reuse of 20% of the materials (refill, bulk products).

L’Oreal keeps using plastic in its packaging while promoting mechanical and chemical recycling of it. They currently integrate 19% of recycled plastic in their packaging, targeting 50% by 2025 and 100% in 2030. In the recycling stream, they clearly proclaim PET, PP, PE as the best options for technically recycled packaging.

The regulatory framework for packaging is currently heterogeneous on markets. By the end of the 2021 year, Europe will set up a digital passport system for packaging. For more information, please check the conference replay on www.myluxepack.com

How does Toray Films Europe adopt a durable approach?

At the Toray Group, we consider sustainability to be the most important global concern of the 21st century.

Toray Films Europe stands as a french producer, strategically located. We ensure to have geographical and relational proximity to our customers. Involved in the durability transition for years now, TFE proposes concrete solutions for luxury packaging such as the thickness reduction of our films (down to 4.5µm for PET and down to 8µm for OPP). We also propose our Lumirror® R films, made with 30% of PCR material (post consumer recycled).
